We found that Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Associate Professor and Head of Cardiology at Shahid Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital in Khulna had treated Shajib at various times from his very young days. In 2004 under Dr. Rahman's advise Shajib had been examined at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Resources Institute at Dhaka Mirpur by Senior Dr. Jahangir Kabir and Child Heart Specialist Senior Dr. Mominuzzaman. The advise of all the doctors was that an operation to rectify the condition should be carried out immediately until which Shajib should be under medication with a blood transfusion every three months. It would seem that due to the lack of funds the much-needed operation was never an option for the family and medicines were administered only intermittently, that was whenever things became quite unbearable for little Shajib.
Our attempt to sponsor Shajib's operation in Khulna did not succeed. Dr. Rahman had opined that his condition was too complicated, advising Khijir to take him to one of the hospitals in the city of Dhaka better known to perform operations of this nature. Having asked around we found that our best hopes lay with the Square Hospital in Dhaka.
Shajib was shown to Dr. Towhiduzzaman in early July 2011, through Prof. Wahiuddin Mahmood (Consultant Anesthesiology at Square hospital). Dr. Towhiduzzaman is a specialist in Intravascular Ultrasound and is a consultant to Square Hospital in Interventional Cardiology. Having carried out the required tests Dr. Towhiduzzamam opined that Shajib suffered from a very advanced stage of the disease known as Congenital Cyanotic Heart Disease and that it would seem to him that no cardiac surgeon in Dhaka would operate on him. He also stated that they lacked a dedicated Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon. For this reason he said that he would not want to perform the required tests for the operation in Dhaka, viz.
cardiac catheterization. His advise was that we should take him to a center where an operation of this nature can be handled confidently, such as the National Heart Centre in Singapore or the Fortis/Escorts Hospital in New Delhi.
We have since contacted three heart centers, the NHS in Singapore and two Fortis hospitals in India. The first choice would be the NHS, which as of this moment seem way out of our reach. Fortis/Escorts New Delhi is the much cheaper alternative.
The cost of treatment would involve the cost of tests and repair surgery, an estimate of which is shown in the page Treatment & Costs, ancillary costs such as airfares, accommodation and other related costs and post operational costs once Shajib returns back to Dhaka. In addition we would need to ensure that we have sufficient funds to meet any complications arising from the surgery or post surgery, such as liver or renal impairment or other organ failure.
Once Shajib recovers our next task would be to see how best we can help him integrate to the society he has left behind. He would need to catch up 10 lost years of study if he is to realize his hope of helping others.
It is certain that Shajib will die soon if his condition is left untreated.
So here we are - to try save Shajib and save his mother, brother and sisters of their anguish.
For sake of convenience we have provided two methods for making contributions, by PAYPAL and bank transfer. You can either use your PAYPAL account or your credit card on PAYPAL right here and now. It is one of the most secure methods for making payment on the internet. And the good thing is PAYPAL even accepts a dollar US as payment.
You may contact any one of us at anytime if you need any further information. We plan to send him for treatment as soon as possible in the month of August. We shall keep you posted on this site of Shajib's condition as things progress.
Shajib needs your support!
